Cutlery
Also known as silverware or tableware, cutlery consists of implements for preparing, serving and eating food. Traditionally, good instruments for this purpose were made of silver, and hence the term “silverware†came into popular use. Today, however, “high-quality cutlery†usually refers to silver-plated, gold-plated, or stainless steel spoons, forks, and knives.

Vintage Cutlery
Cutlery in general can be machine-washed nowadays. Current dishwashers are safe as long as you do not mix metals—that is, silver-plated should not be put in the dishwasher together with gold-plated or stainless steel. If you really care for your expensive cutlery, though, you should opt for hand washing. When using powder detergents, avoid lemon or orange scents.
